Halloween Costumes

The crow mask was my first really "high effort" halloween costume. Around Somerville and Cambridge there's a couple streets where the community closes off the street and their filled with trick-or-treating kids all night. The crow mask was a big hit and occasionally too scary for some kids :)

The owl mask is more comfortable to wear, more detailed and the overall costume is more cohesive too. I'll hand out little 3d printed toys to kids, and that seems to balance out the scariness for most of them.

The "yarn monster" is new for 2025 and very different than the first two. It's much easier to see out of (I look out the giant mouth), and I carry the entire head and arms around with a cheap baby carrier strapped to me chest. The whole thing is almost like a puppet show I carry in front of me, I can move either of the arms, make the mouth move or use the tongue like a puppet. The eyes are 3d printed and run with 6 servos to randomly move and change colors.

Yarn Monster Construction

  • Lots of hot glue & yarn
  • Wooden & 3d printed frame mounted on a baby carrier
  • Eyes are 3d printed based on this project, scaled up about 500% and with most pieces redesigned to fit in the head.

Bird mask Construction

  • Lots of hot glue
  • 3d printed owl skull is the base of the mask
  • Eyes are small LED screen running animated eyes
  • Eyes use the Spooky Eyes code from Adafruit
