DIY Couch

We wanted to get rid of our old couch and replace it with something that would be made from sustainable materials and also allergy friendly. There were some nice looking couches online that were very expensive, and we could have a couch built from the materials we wanted, but the wait time was many months out. So we decided to just build one ourselves - "How hard could it be?"

It was actually pretty doable, we landed on a frame design and construction that wasn't too hard to build. And took classes at Gather Here to learn how to sew the upholstery. It was a lot of trial and error, trying out different measurements and materials to find something 'just right.' The design definitely changed as we built it and started to use it before it was completely finished. But now it feels perfect.

Construction

  • Frame: Birch butcher block countertops, with large spline joints and lag bolts to hold everything together.
  • Seat Cushions: Organic latex foam, sourced from mattress toppers in 1" to 3" thicknesses, stacked up to roughly 8". Wrapped in wool and ticking fabric.
  • Back Cushions: latex foam core surrounded by shredded latex and kapok fiber fill.
  • Upholstery: cotton allergy covers and Two Sisters upholstery fabric. Two Sisters is an amazing company, they do an unbelivable amount of research on sustainable fabrics, and were an increadible resource.
